Election 2008

And the Winner Is: Joe Biden.

By John Nichols, The Nation. Posted August 23, 2008.

It didn't take a newfangled text message, just an old-fashioned leak, to identify Obama's running mate.

Word of the Biden selection spread late Friday night, barely twelve hours before the event in Springfield, Illinois, at which the presumptive Democratic nominee for president was set to introduce the presumptive Democratic nominee for vice president.

Ultimately, Obama went with the guy who suggested most pointedly during the race for the Democratic nomination that Obama was not quite experienced enough for the presidency.

It was Biden who suggested in an August, 2007, debate that, "I think (Obama) can be ready, but right now I don't believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training."

Challenged on that statement, the senator said he stood by it.

Expect to see those comments featured in an ad for Republican John McCain. (At 1:22 a.m. EST, the Republican's campaign released a statement that, "There has been no harsher critic of Barack Obama's lack of experience than Joe Biden. Biden has denounced Barack Obama's poor foreign policy judgment and has strongly argued in his own words what Americans are quickly realizing -- that Barack Obama is not ready to be President.")

But don't expect McCain's attempts to use Biden against Obama to do much damage.

Democrats, and ultimately Americans, should be able to reconcile themselves to the fact of a No. 2 who suggested Obama was not ready to be No. 1.

How? By recognizing that in the modern era political-party tickets really do blend into a whole.

For all the silly talk about vice-presidential nominees being irrelevant, the truth is that they have always mattered -- either to party unity or to the broader electorate.

Presidential and vice presidential candidates run as a team, complementing one another and guarding against the vulnerabilities of their running mates.

Obama tried to suggest that the 2008 race was a contest between his judgment and John McCain's experience.

But that sounded a little too much like Democrat Michael Dukakis peddling the notion that his 1988 race with Republican George Herbert Walker Bush was all about assessing the relative competence of the contenders. That line didn't work in 1988 and it wasn't working in 2008.

With a new Cold War in the offering and a host of global conflicts and challenges brewing, Obama really was facing questions about whether he was ready. He needed some foreign-policy muscle. That knocked out contenders who might have complemented Obama's "Change We Can Believe In" campaign theme, such as Virginian Governor Tim Kaine.

It is true that Obama might also have gotten what he needed by adding New York Senator Hillary Clinton to his ticket, just as it is true that Obama might have been able to run with Clinton. But he could not run with Bill Clinton, and that was that.

So Obama was left with Biden. And that made for an acceptable, perhaps even satisfying conclusion to the great veep search.

For all of Biden's imperfections -- a charge of political plagiarism twenty years ago, a reputation for verbosity, a record of gaffes and a wrong vote to authorize President Bush to attack Iraq -- the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee gives Obama what he needs.

And there is the added bonus that Biden loves politics. He enjoys the sport of it. He's good on the stump. He's good in the debates -- indeed, when he was competing for the nomination, Biden won several of the debates. And he's comfortable campaigning in industrial cities and rural regions.

After a weak mid-summer performance by Obama, the scale was tipping McCain's way.

But when Joe Biden takes Barack Obama's side, the scale may well tip back in a Democratic direction.

Biden may not have been the perfect choice.

He may not even have been the preferred choice.

But he was, at least to Obama's view, the necessary choice.

and the loser..of course..is the american ppl...nothing against joe biden..but a cardinal rule of presidential politics holds that a ticket of two northern liberals is box-office poison...let alone the fact that the choice of biden is already being framed as a tacit admission from obama that he doesnt have all of what it takes to be POTUS...

the democrats have one final opportunity to nominate a viable ticket at the convention (which may still keep biden as VP)..and they better use it if they want to win...

This selection does not at all compare to Bush picking Cheney. Cheney was Bush's old and trusted friend. One had the feeling Bush was seeking someone he could trust, not, as in the case of Obama's handlers picking Biden, someone who can take the candidate's hand and walk him to school.

Essentially, the Democrats have thrown in the towel on the issue of the candidates' gravitas.

There is no doubt about that. I don't see anybody else that fills more gaps or adds more experience.

To those critical of Obama's pick name someone else with Biden's experience and name recognition. Even Hillary can't match Biden's resume'.

Whoops. I meant to post this as an independent comment, not as a reply. Here it is.

He certainly loves politics, he's thick skinned and comfortable on the attack, and the fact he likes to talk a lot is no imperfection at all. It conveys an attack dog mentality. It shows he's not apologetic about speaking his mind and hammering a point, and repetition is vital in politics.

Biden a great asset. While Obama takes the high moral road of the patient, refined leader, Biden can be the fighter during the campaign. Thus the Obama-Biden campaign can attack when needed while still appearing above the fray.

Dem ticket co-opted by Merchants of Death

Obama has already shown his supporters that he will support the status quo but this selection of Biden shows us just how deep the co-option has gone.

Biden is a convicted plagiarist with no compassion for the poor and no connection to lower-income Americans.

Biden is also wholly-owned by the DuPonts and MBNA.

And, now, so is Obama.

We can expect more war, more profiteering for the already rich and more exploitation of the poor.

I've said it before and i'll say it again;
" If they don't Walk Their Talk, they're useless!!!"
Every political folly either side has trumped up has been just that..folly.
They all 'walk the walk and talk the talk'.
This means they say one thing and do another.
The Dems have some great campaign fodder and unless they totally come through on it,that's exaxctly what it is..fodder.
My only hope is that all these new voters they're signing up faster than a hot knife through butter won't become so disillusioned by the lies and bullshit that we get
The New American Revolution of 2010.

Why Joe Biden? . . .
Posted by: dustdevil on Aug 23, 2008 1:46 PM

Why would Obama pick an old political hack for his running mate?

I suspect he doesn't get to make his own decisions.

Since Biden is big buddies with Israel I would think they are the ones who picked him.

Sharon is dead and gone, but they still control who gets elected in this country.

A country the size of new Jersey with a population less than New York City is dictating our politics and our foreign policy.

Why don't US citizens wake up?

No matter who John McCain picks for a running mate his people will stand behind him like good faithful followers. It's the only way he can win the presidency. He has no qualifications. I'm not in favor of blindly following, but let's face it, trashing Obama & Biden leaves us with McCain and God knows who. Get Obama & Biden elected, and then object to whatever you don't like. Attitude can cost us this election. Thanks, ANNA

Joe Biden rounds out oligarch Obama "advisor"-handlers that include George Soros and and Zbignew Brzezinski. All eager to fund, maintain and expand a FISA spy state with a sham 9/11 " war on terror" of 1000 lies into Eurasia starring Georgia in the crosshairs .

And of course all of these suspects are lackeys for what late, great George Carlin called "the OWNERS" of a criminal FASCIST ruling class that hasn't lost its grip on power since before the Gilded Age.

As I keep saying on these blogs: the fact McCain is an even more transparent ruling class puppet than Obama does not make him any kind of real choice as president of a nation. (That remains Kucinich, Cynthia Mckinney and Ron Paul)

It only makes Americans more birdbath naive.

I dont understand this selection.. With all the qualified people out there, Obama selects someone who has questioned his ability to lead.. insulted 7-11 employees and insulted blacks not to mention lifting speeches from others.

Is the election not hard enough for him..he wants to raise more obstacles?

First, I don't think you can be successful, even noticed, in national politics without stepping in line, to a more or lesser extent, with the corporate powers. Unfortunately that is just the way it is right now. How are Dennis Kucinich or Ralph Nader or Cynthia McKinney going to win a national election? They aren't, period. We will be lucky if Obama wins. It's all too controlled and manipulated. I mean, how else would John McCain, who demonstrates daily what an idiot he is, have a chance to win?

And as Obama steps to the right to pick up votes, I say to myself, he sure isn't interested in mine.

I think, however, that we are very close to having no chance to regain any semblance of democracy. And with four more years of the right wing appointing not only Supreme Court justices but other federal judges, and stacking the department of justice with loyalists, we will have absolutely no chance.

The quality of judges that I believe Obama would appoint as opposed to those of McCain is not really worth comparing. And the impact of judges lasts way beyond the appointing president.

There are several Supreme Court justices that I believe will wait to retire until the next president is in power, but not beyond no matter who he is. With McCain being able to replace one of the more "liberal" justices, safe and legal abortion in this country will be a thing of the past.

While things are seemingly so broken we need big changes, we won't even be able to make small changes in the correct direction with a completely right wing judiciary.

So hold your nose if you have to, and vote Obama and talk everyone you know into voting Obama. It's about the judiciary. It is that important.

Not a bad choice, all things considered

Considering the political minefield that Obama has to negotiate, this seems like a good choice, conforming to the cardinal rule of VP selection; above all, do no harm.

Biden will fill the "attack dog" slot on the ticket very adequately, taking the fight to the GOP with pugnacity and determination, while helping to calm fears about Obama's lack of defense and foreign policy experience. (I'll take Obama's temperament, smarts and management style over McHotHead's any day of the week).

I wouldn't worry too much about the GOP making hay from Biden's statements during the primaries; I mean, hey! Anybody remember GHW Bush's "Voodoo Economics" statements about Reagan back in 1980? I expect Biden will tackle the issue of his statements head-on in his acceptance speech and that'll be that.

Also, given McCain's recent problems with plagiarism, that 20-year-old "skeleton" in Biden's closet doesn't seem like much of an issue any more.

McCain has his own VP minefield to get through; any choice he makes will end up pissing off a significant percentage of his "base" and Grumpy Ol' Gramps will not be able to hide behind the press in one-on-one debates with Obama. Likewise, Biden will make mincemeat of pretty much anybody McCain could throw at him (can you see Mit "Uber-phoney" Romney falling into that buzz saw? We can only hope!)

The tide begins to turn! On to Denver! On to November!

It will be even harder now for the 'lesser of two evil' crowd to get up any enthusiasm at all for maintaining their addiction to the DP. The Democrats are throwing the election away by picking this sorry ass conservative hack at this time, and deserve to lose.

There is no real surprise either. Everything about Barack Obama is a total fraud. The only thing real is his saber rattling which includes praising Bush for giving the Green Light to Georgia against Russia. Both these 2 parties are in it all together. They both are perma 'Global War on Terrorism' neocon parties under multinational corporate control. Voting Obama would make me sick to my stomach even. That was before Biden, and now they make me even more nauseous.

I can't wait to see the YouTube morph jobs work on the new Democratic comedy duo.

As for Obama's judicious choice of Supreme Court nominees, if we judge by his choice of running mate, we need not lose sleep contemplating decisions that he'll never get to make. McCain may well choose Joe Lieberman as his running mate, writing off the Republican base he no longer needs to win, and further solidifying his independent credentials with the independent voters who will decide the election in a couple of months.

Barring total economic collapse and $10 gasoline, this election is over, folks.

The Israelis rule this country and its politicians. They may as well be dancing monkeys along side the guy with the wind up box!

"Yes massa! I be doing it for you!" I please you good massa! I know you da boss. I try to be good smiling monkey for you"

Well keep playing the shuffling footed monkey for Israel you digusting, grinning, bobble headed, money loving scum. The citizens of the U.S. are slowly waking up out of their Matrix like cocoons. When the time comes to pay the piper, I do not want to hear about The "Holy" Bible, or WWII.

I am going to simply sit back and watch the fireworks!

If there is any nation that has PROVEN itself to be a threat to the United States, it is Israel! Predictably the Jewish community overwhelmingly stands DEAD silent in regards to this issue unless they are calling each of us who speak out "anti-semetic."

Yes I am "ANTI" PRO-Israel! If black people in this country state we are "Pro-Africa," people of other ethnicities would be up in arms all over the mass media! Yet pro-Israeli Americans are celebrated.

Well guess what MASSA? The LIGHT is ON and people are actually putting on their glasses and taking OFF their MULE visors!

First thoughts only; Now our job is to research Joe Biden completely, including the video posted on VIMEO which I have not viewed yet, but the link is in one of the comments above and the title is Missing Links by username missinglinks. I do also recommend this video ZEITGEIST at www.zeitgeist.com Aside from all the fear and loathing, or should I say paranoia in AMERICA, it's time we take this country back into the hands of Lady Liberty. I also want to know how Hilary Clinton is reacting or giving support to this ticket. I'm only a little bit afreaid that Obama has shot himself in the foot, but with all the DIEBOLD election rigging and disenfranchised voters, perhaps OBAMA will hobble into the whitehouse and BIDENS legacy will be that he helped restore democracy in America. To give up now is to surrender to the Republican Hate Machine, so I advise all to hold on tight, the ship has hit a wave. Let's carry on as usual and send them both to the White House. The machine cannot be repaired if it crashes at sea. BLESS YOU ALL and Thanks John Nickols for writing for Alternet.

Already, this choice is being framed, uncompromisingly, as "Obama has chosen someone who complements HIS WEAKNESSES and SHORTCOMINGS.

Stephanopolous was blathering on that way this morning on network teevee.

The pick "is about Obama's weakness".

YOU CAN BE ABSOLUTELY SURE, come the selection of McCain's VP choice, that the pick will be framed in the mainstream "liberal" media, as a choice that "complements and builds on McCain's experience and strength".

That's the meme that the mainstream media will be framing until the convention, trying to blunt an Obama bump.

EVERY commentator will begin with, "so, does the pick of Biden SOLVE OBAMA's WEAKNESS

obama....weakness

obama...weakness

obama...weakness....over and over. Just ask anything, but make sure to pair those two words together in the question.

THAT'S the playbook for the republican-controlled "liberal" media.
